One World Goods

One World Goods is a volunteer-run, nonprofit fair trade gift shop located in Pittsford Plaza along Monroe Avenue in Pittsford, NY. Founded in 1987 by a small group of church women who wanted to support impoverished artisans in developing countries, the organization's name is an acronym for Global Opportunities Organized for Dignity and Self-worth. What began with products packed in laundry baskets and sold at community venues grew into a permanent storefront in 1991, followed by incorporation as an independent 501(c)(3) in 1994. The shop moved to its current Pittsford Plaza location in 1997 and completed a full renovation in 2007.

One World Goods stocks handcrafted items from fairly compensated adult artisans and farmers in over 38 countries. Product categories include:

• Jewelry and accessories, including scarves
• Clothing made from organic cotton and other sustainable materials
• Home decor crafted from recycled glass, newspapers, and other reclaimed materials
• Fair trade food products such as coffees, teas, and olive oil
• Children's items and gifts

The shop sources goods that meet fair trade standards as defined by the World Fair Trade Organization, Fair Trade Federation, and Fairtrade International, ensuring no child labor and equal opportunities for women in production.

One World Goods holds distinction as the Rochester area's dedicated fair trade retail shop, operating for nearly four decades with an entirely volunteer staff. The organization combines retail with education, hosting events like World Fair Trade Day celebrations that feature food sampling, artisan craft demonstrations, and cultural programming. Its commitment to sustainability extends to the products themselves, which incorporate materials like recycled glass and organic cotton sourced from artisan cooperatives worldwide.

The shop is situated inside Pittsford Plaza at 3349 Monroe Avenue, a well-established shopping center in the Pittsford area southeast of Rochester. The plaza offers free parking and easy access from Monroe Avenue, one of the main commercial corridors connecting Brighton and Pittsford. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM (closing at 6:00 PM early in the week and 8:00 PM Thursday through Saturday) and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
