Pittsford Student Art Fundraiser Benefits Habitat for Humanity — October 17 in Fairport

The Short Version

  • Art Creates Hope runs Saturday, October 17, 4 to 8 PM, at Railroad Street Artworks, 3 Railroad Street, Suite G, in Fairport.
  • The work comes from Pittsford Mendon and Sutherland students, their teachers, and community artists, all responding to the meaning of home.
  • Proceeds support Greater Rochester Habitat for Humanity, which builds affordable homes across the region.
  • Admission is free, and the art stays on display through October 24.
  • The venue is an artists' cooperative gallery that opened in August 2024 near the Fairport Lift Bridge.

Pittsford students have spent the fall making art about what home means. On Saturday, October 17, they'll hang it in a Fairport gallery and sell it to help pay for actual homes. "Art Creates Hope" is a Pittsford student art fundraiser for Greater Rochester Habitat for Humanity, running from 4 to 8 PM at Railroad Street Artworks.

The pieces come from Pittsford Mendon and Pittsford Sutherland high school students, their teachers, and community artists. Every piece responds to the same prompt: the meaning of home. The event flyer puts the premise in its subhead: everyone deserves a place to call home.

Railroad Street Artworks

Railroad Street Artworks is an artists' cooperative gallery that opened in August 2024, about a five-minute walk from the Fairport Lift Bridge. It shows work by roughly three dozen artists, each living within 20 miles of Fairport.

The artists run the place themselves. They pay display fees and work afternoon shifts at the front desk. The gallery also offers classes for artists of all levels and is where the Rochester Art Club now meets.

Where the Money Goes

One of the organizers told us by text that admission is free and that 100% of art purchases, donations, and beverage tips go to Habitat, which builds affordable homes across the Greater Rochester region. Donations can be made by Venmo or credit card through Habitat's campaign page, the same link as the QR code on the event flyer. Cash tips for the guest bartenders are welcome on the night.
