The building at 153 Liberty Pole Way dates to 1850. Before Abilene, a 2023 WXXI profile noted, it had been a rooming house, an alleged brothel, and the first office for AIDS Rochester. Deutsch opened Abilene there on March 21, 2008, naming it after a song by roots musician Dave Alvin.
Deutsch has been in Rochester music since 1977, starting as a bartender at Scorgie's and eventually becoming the booker. His original vision for Abilene was "a sort of corner saloon with a jukebox." It turned into a full-time live music venue booking national touring singer-songwriters alongside local artists — what Deutsch called a "Cheers-meets-Austin club." The closure announcement came September 14. Deutsch said he wanted to "ease up a bit, maybe shift a bit of focus, and get to bed a little earlier."

The size was part of it. In a room that holds 50 to 100 people, there is no bad seat and no real distance between the performer and the audience. Deutsch booked Americana and roots music consistently enough that Abilene became a known address for that community in Rochester. He also gave local musicians real opportunities: WXXI reported that McKinley James opened for blues guitarist Chris Duarte at Abilene at age 13.
13WHAM reported Deutsch called the decision "bittersweet" and credited 18 years of building "a vibrant and caring community of music fans." The shows that came through — touring singer-songwriters, local musicians getting their early stages — ran on the same calendar, in the same 50-to-100-person room.
