Free Breakfast and Lunch for Every Pittsford Student Starting September 8 — What Families Need to Know
The Short Version
- Starting September 8, 2026, every PCSD student from kindergarten through twelfth grade receives free breakfast and lunch — no application required to get the meals.
- Middle and high school families should still complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application even though meals are already free — completed applications determine how much state and federal funding PCSD receives.
- Submitting the application does not affect your child's access to free meals; it only affects district funding and may unlock additional benefits like technology access or fee waivers.
- Applications can be submitted online through Infinite Campus or dropped off in paper form at the Food Service Department, 100 Mendon Center Road, Pittsford, NY 14534.
- Elementary families who already applied last year do not need to reapply for 2026-27.
Starting September 8, free breakfast and lunch will be available to every Pittsford student — from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Under New York's Universal Free School Meals program, PCSD is extending free school meals to every student in the district, with no income threshold and no application required to receive them.
What Is Changing: Free Meals at Every Grade Level

What Is Changing: Free Meals at Every Grade Level
The PCSD Food Service Department has confirmed that beginning September 8, 2026, breakfast and lunch will be available at no cost to all students in the district.
For secondary families, this is the news that changes back-to-school planning. The Pittsford free school lunch program now covers middle and high school students — if your family has been packing lunches, keeping a cafeteria account funded, or sending cash with your student, none of that is required this year. Every grade level is covered, every day.
Why the Application Still Matters — Especially for Middle and High School Families

Why the Application Still Matters — Especially for Middle and High School Families
Here is what most families won't expect: middle and high school households should still complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application — even though meals are already free.
"Submitting an application does not affect your child's ability to receive free breakfast or lunch."
— PCSD Food Service, pittsfordschools.org
The application is entirely separate from meal access. What it affects is how much state aid and federal reimbursement PCSD receives. The district is required to collect completed applications from eligible middle and high school households to qualify for those funds — and the money supports programs well beyond the cafeteria.
Approved applications can also help eligible families access additional benefits beyond meals. Technology access programs and fee waivers are among the possibilities, depending on household eligibility under the federal guidelines.
How to Submit Before the School Year Begins

How to Submit Before the School Year Begins
The application is available online through Infinite Campus — log in to your family account and navigate to the Food Service section. A paper version can be downloaded from the PCSD Food Service page and submitted to the Food Service Department at 100 Mendon Center Road, Pittsford, NY 14534.
Getting the form in before September 8 keeps district records current from day one and activates any additional benefits your household qualifies for as soon as the application is approved.
The first day of school is September 8. Submit the application through Infinite Campus or drop it at 100 Mendon Center Road before then.

There will always be plenty to debate when it comes to state and national politics, but making sure every student has access to breakfast and lunch is something we should all be able to support. This isn’t necessarily just about income—many parents know the daily scramble of getting the kids fed, packing lunches and getting everyone out the door while also trying to get ready for work. As long as the meals are nutritious and provide kids with what they need to stay focused and ready to learn, this is a win in my book.

I think this is a good way to handle this, hope it works out well. I do however think ever household should indicate whether they plan on using this benefit so that the school cafeterias can plan accordingly. We don't want kids not being able to get a meal, but we also do not want large quantities of food being thrown out every day. Maybe the excess could go to a food kitchen?

Joe Combs Marxism calls for replacing private ownership of businesses and industry with collective or government control. A real example would be the government taking over privately owned companies—not providing breakfast and lunch to children in a public school. We can debate the cost or how the program is managed, but calling it Marxism simply isn’t accurate.

Fair point to raise, thanks for posting — the funding source matters. That said, the record here is specific: New York State's Universal Free School Meals program means meals are provided "at no cost to all students," and the district's own page confirms "every student receives one complete breakfast and one complete lunch daily, regardless of household income or application status." Calling them "free" in the article accurately describes what families pay at the register, which is nothing — the funding mechanism is a separate and genuinely worthwhile conversation. https://www.cn.nysed.gov/content/new-york-state-universal-free-meals https://pittsfordvillage.com/free-breakfast-and-lunch-for-every-pittsford-student-starting-september-8-what-families-need-to-know

The article's language reflects the program exactly as New York State describes it: meals are provided "at no cost to all students." The verified record confirms the funding mechanism — state aid and federal reimbursement are determined partly through Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications — so the cost is real, just not paid at the register by families. Calling that "free" or "no cost" is consistent with how the state, the district, and the program itself characterize it. https://www.cn.nysed.gov/content/new-york-state-universal-free-meals https://pittsfordvillage.com/free-breakfast-and-lunch-for-every-pittsford-student-starting-september-8-what-families-need-to-know

Nichole Marie it sure is! Children are required by law to be there. They should feed them. The only irony I see here is that it is the wealthiest district, with the largest populating of very high income households. As always, the rich get richer.

Worth knowing here: this isn't a Pittsford-specific choice — New York State's Universal Free School Meals program requires that, beginning in school year 2025-2026, all New York schools participating in federal meal programs "provide reimbursable school meals at no cost to all students." Every district in the state, regardless of wealth, is part of the same program. The meals reach every child equally — as the district confirms, "every student receives one complete breakfast and one complete lunch daily, regardless of household income or application status." https://www.cn.nysed.gov/content/new-york-state-universal-free-meals

Ian Cubitt Nobody said they shouldn't eat in that time. That's were parents have responsibility to feed them. If they need help they should have to prove they need it. Taxpayers shouldn't have to feed kids of those who can afford it but prefer to mooch off the system.

Terry Pratham This is off topic but in reply to your comment. How many firehouses have closed or combined with others as they aren't needed, yet tax payers have been paying to keep them running. Should taxpayers keep paying even if something isnt needed? Should taxpayers have to pay to feed kids of parents(in the wealthiest town in area)who are perfectly capable of feeding their kids, yet will chose to get it because its free?

That's a fair and important question. This is actually a statewide change: New York State now requires all participating districts to provide free breakfast and lunch to every student, regardless of household income. The verified language is that "all New York students receive free breakfast and lunch at no cost beginning in the 2025-2026 school year" — so yes, Rochester City School District students are covered by the same state mandate. https://www.cn.nysed.gov/content/new-york-state-universal-free-meals

Yes — the program covers every student, full stop. The district's own language is unambiguous: "Every student receives one complete breakfast and one complete lunch daily, regardless of household income or application status." What a family drives doesn't enter into it; that's the policy as New York's Universal Free School Meals program requires. https://www.pittsfordschools.org/departments/food-service https://pittsfordvillage.com/free-breakfast-and-lunch-for-every-pittsford-student-starting-september-8-what-families-need-to-know

‼️For the 2026–27 school year, New York State continues its universal free school meals program, backed by a $395 million allocation in the enacted state budget. ‼️All public, charter, and non-public schools participating in the national school lunch and breakfast programs are required to provide one free breakfast and one free lunch daily to all students regardless of family income.Program Highlights for 2026–27No Cost to Families: Every student receives one reimbursable breakfast and one reimbursable lunch each school day at zero charge.State Backing: The state covers the remaining student share of costs for reduced-price and paid meals that are federally claimed.Extra Items Excluded: Second helpings, a la carte items, or extra snacks outside the standard reimbursable meal must still be paid for out of pocket.Family Forms: Schools may still ask households to fill out income forms or family application data. This data helps districts secure additional federal or state funding separate from the meal program itself. For more details or to check specific district implementation, check the New York State Education Department Universal Free Meals guidelines or consult Hunger Solutions New York. https://otda.ny.gov/workingfamilies/schoollunch.asp?TSPD_101_R0=084c043756ab2000f34c9163cae2b353203df11384d353cf73387f464200de4b06eaa4c068a0375c08dd43dd6d143000c6a4ff0fe37e68e894fb776f22763ef0421b68cd03bf29ade0a29cc9827edc2b440aa129830c2729c3deaabd20527101
