Sutherland Street Roadwork — Phase I Begins Mid-July
Weather permitting, Phase I of the Sutherland Street project, which will address infrastructure improvements, should begin as early as Monday, July 20th.
Crews will be excavating around catch basins and the associated underground stormwater piping. This is an important step in improving the area's drainage infrastructure as part of the overall sidewalk and road project which will conclude in 2027.
The duration of Phase I should be 7-10 days and residents can expect the following:
- The road will remain open. All residents will have access to their driveways.
- There will be temporary lane shifts and traffic pattern adjustments during active construction as there will be construction equipment, excavating, and increased truck traffic along the road.
- Effective as of July 19th at 5 pm: NO Parking on Sutherland from Jefferson to Monroe until further notice; signage will be posted and violations will be enforced.
The Village will provide project updates as necessary. We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation while these important infrastructure improvements are completed.

New Canal Pathway Signage Promotes Safe Shared Use
Visitors may notice new bicycle wayfinding paint installed along the canal corridor. These signs are not a change in Village policy; rather, they align Village messaging with existing Canal Corporation signage to provide consistent guidance throughout the corridor.
The updated signage reminds cyclists that:
- Cyclists traveling eastbound or westbound should remain on the Schoen Place roadway and use the Main Street crosswalk with the flashing beacons when continuing through the corridor.
- An alternate route is available for those wishing to use the canal path: cyclists must dismount and walk their bicycles beneath the N. Main Street bridge along the length of the Schoen Place canal path to the State Street Bridge, where riding may safely resume.
- Bicycle riding is not permitted beneath the bridge on the shared-use pedestrian pathway.
- Walking bicycles between the N. Main and State Street bridges reduces potential conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians and improves safety for everyone enjoying the canal district.

FOG stands for Fats, Oils, and Grease. The proposed amendment to Chapter 164 would update Village code on how food-service businesses must manage grease waste to prevent sewer blockages.
