Pizza Out, Pilates In: The Restaurant Approved for 5 South Main Street Isn't Coming

The Short Version

The pizza restaurant approved for 5 South Main Street in June will not open — the property owner is pursuing a Pilates studio for the space instead.
The Board granted the Special Use Permit 5-0 on June 9 for a 44-seat restaurant with a 16-stool accessory bar, after cutting the requested closing times back to 10 p.m. on weeknights.
Nothing about the Pilates studio has reached a Village Board agenda or packet as of the July 28 meeting.

The pizza restaurant approved for 5 South Main Street in Pittsford Village is not coming. The Mayor mentioned it to me in a phone call yesterday, and the Village Clerk/Treasurer's office confirmed it in writing this morning: the property owner has decided against the restaurant use and is pursuing a Pilates studio for the space instead.

What the Village Approved at 5 South Main Street

The application described an interior renovation of an existing Main Street storefront to create a full-service restaurant — a pizza shop — with an accessory bar: 44 dining seats, 16 bar stools, a kitchen, no outdoor seating, no expansion.

It didn't get there quietly. I sat through the earlier meetings, and the proposal drew real debate. Most residents who spoke wanted a restaurant in that storefront. A few nearby neighbors pushed back hard on hours, noise, and parking, and kept pushing. By the June 9 public hearing the argument had largely been had — one resident told the Board that nearby restaurants had added to neighborhood vitality with little downside, and the remaining questions were about fire separation, refuse, and building occupancy.

The Board attached conditions and approved it 5-0, cutting the requested closing times back to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and midnight Friday and Saturday, with refuse handling held to Village quiet hours.

Meeting after meeting. A unanimous vote. It was never given a public name. It will not open.

The Pilates studio has not appeared on a Village Board agenda or packet through the July 28 meeting, so nothing is on the public record yet beyond the Clerk's confirmation. The Village's meetings page is where it would show up first.

If you were looking forward to pizza on Main Street, this is a loss — and for the neighbors who fought the hours, something else. But the storefront isn't going dark, and a studio puts people on the sidewalk in the morning, a rhythm Main Street doesn't have much of.

What do we want the four corners to feel like on a Tuesday at 8 a.m.? Is that a different question than what we want on a Friday night?

I don’t understand. There is a yoga studio a few doors down, and a Pilates studio around the corner in Northfield Common.
